Practical advice for surviving 25 questions in 40 minutes — time management, guessing, and avoiding the common late-test traps.
Pace yourself
25 questions, 40 minutes — that's roughly 90 seconds per question. The first 10 should feel quick (≤60s each), saving time for the last 5–10.
Two-pass approach
Pass 1: answer everything you can solve confidently and skip anything that stalls you. Pass 2: revisit skipped problems with the time you saved.
Guessing is fine
There is no penalty for wrong answers on the AMC 8 — fill in every bubble. If you can eliminate even one choice, your expected value goes up.
Estimate, don't always compute
Many answer choices are far apart. A rough estimate often pinpoints the answer faster than an exact calculation.
Diagram everything
Geometry and counting problems get dramatically easier when you sketch the situation. Don't try to hold figures in your head.
Watch for traps in the last 5
Problems 21–25 are designed to look like easier patterns. Re-read the question carefully and check units / constraints before locking in.
